"And Can It Be" is poetry set to music - a dramatic cry of amazed gratitude and love for the Savior.
Every verse, every line of this incredible church hymn is fraught with meaning. Singing this hymn is like reading a sermon... but so beautifully stated.
"Long my imprisoned spirit lay... fast bound in sin, and nature's night." These words in the third verse paint a vivid picture.
Listen to a new piano arrangement of this hymn of worship:
This piano arrangement is not easy! Sorry. I wanted a full-sounding, energetic arrangement that could sound very BIG.
You need an exciting background for the phrases,
"Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray; I woke - the dungeon flamed with light! My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee."
“I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you;
"I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness."

The piano arrangement is in two keys: the key of G (shown), and the key of F.
Here is the standard four-part harmony found in most hymnals. It's easier to play than my piano arrangement, but it lacks the energy and momentum. Good for singing, though!

The immortal dies - who could anticipate such a plan? And Lucifer, the "firstborn seraph," endeavors to see just how deep is this divine love. That is the story of what some call "the Angelic Conflict" - our human history is a focal part of that conflict. The Cross answered the question, How deep is God's love?
And can it be that I should gain an int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be, that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Refrain:
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
’Tis myst’ry all: th’ Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries to sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more.
He left His Father’s throne above—So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love, And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For, O my God, it found out me!
Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray—I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’ eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Hi, I'm Dana! (Say that like "Anna".) I'm the owner of Music-for-Music-Teachers.com, and this newer site, SingTheBibleStory.com.
Like some of you, I've been playing the piano since early childhood, and have added a few other instruments along the way, plus an interest in arranging and composing music.
I also happen to love the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Christian worldview that portrays The Great War in the heavens, in which we here on earth are destined to be a part.
