In the graphic above, there is a tiny error in measure 13, however, I have corrected it in the PDF. See if you can spot that change, and also a chord pattern change in the same measure!
Though the lyrics "We gather together" suggest a congenial church potluck, the actual tone of the three verses is a bit martial in some spots!
Mention of "the wicked oppressor," "the battle," "the fight we were winning," and God being our Defender all remind us that this world is not our home, and we are to be engaged in spiritual warfare - not just chasing the next dollar!
All the more reason to seek the company of like-minded believers...

He chastens and hastens His will to make known;
the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to His name, He forgets not His own.
2 Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
so from the beginning the fight we were winning:
the Lord was at our side - the glory be Thine!
3 We all do extol Thee, Thou leader triumphant,
and pray that Thou still our defender wilt be.
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
